For Tim, bullying reinforced feelings of worthlessness and rejection that he was already feeling from his community and, he feared, from God. He attributes much of his happiness now to his parents’ love, which helped him correct the negative messages he was receiving elsewhere. He also found success as he worked to finally accept himself by examining his long held beliefs and the “group thought process,” which, in turn, opened him up to new communities that were unconditionally loving and respectful of him as a gay man.
