Seth hails from a long line of devout Mormons including pioneers who farmed the desert lands of Utah and musicians who contributed masterworks to the Mormon hymnal. As a gay man and devoted Latter Day Saint, Seth soon realized that he would have to navigate uncharted spiritual territory just as his pioneer ancestors had done a century earlier.

Seth was acutely aware of his attraction to boys by the time he was 7 years old. He didn’t realize his feelings were considered egregious by his religious community until he was given a Strength of the Youth pamphlet following a Deacon’s interview. He went home that evening and wept upon the realization that his homosexuality–as intrinsic to his identity as his eye color–was “an abomination in the eyes of God.”  Throughout his adolescence and into his early twenties, Seth tried to convince himself that his feelings were just a phase. It wasn’t until he fell in love shortly after his mission that Seth’s world opened up; suddenly his life was full of possibility. Blessed with tremendous support from his family, Seth now openly embraces his sexuality. Although no longer an active Mormon, Seth still honors the LDS culture in which he was raised and embodies the pioneer spirit of forging ahead with faith.

We couldn’t take our cameras to Seth, so he recorded his own story and sent it on to us. Please consider recording your own story and sending it in to share.
