When he first came out, Ryan thought that the only way he could experience being gay was if he left the church. Though he tried that for a time, his faith eventually led him back. His journey taught him to be more accepting of others, since one can’t know what everyone else is going through. It taught him that he shouldn’t hate himself for what he feels. It taught him that being gay isn’t bad. Ryan feels that there is one path to God—the gospel—and his being gay doesn’t bar him from that path. This knowledge has allowed him to reconcile his sexuality with his faith: “I know the church is true…I also know that I’m gay. I know them the same way. I can’t distrust one without distrusting the other.”
