For Daniel, it’s difficult to explain how integral both being gay and being Mormon are to his identity. He’s not willing to throw his spiritual experiences out the window because of his homosexuality–but he also knows that to ignore his attraction to men would be just as damaging as forsaking his faith. As the youngest of eleven children in what many people perceive to be a perfect Mormon family, Daniel knew he would disappoint his family by not following their examples and marrying in the temple. Despite the pain of that realization, meeting other LGBTQ Mormons has given Daniel hope that sexuality and religion are not incompatible. His advice to Mormons with LGBTQ family and friends is to simply try a little harder to love.
